Plants and flowers not only look beautiful - they also connect us to nature and inspire a sense of peace and calm.

Natural touches are always a joy. With its beauty and gentle fragrance, a vase of fresh blooms will instantly lift a space, while houseplants help create interest and focal point. But botanicals can also have a calming effect in our homes. From delicate ferns and lush aloes to fragrant roses and exotic orchids, greenery and fresh flowers can help reduce feelings of anxiety and boost productivity.

  1. Clean and Clear.

Research by the Royal Horticultural Society suggests that having plants in our homes can improve the interior air quality while reducing stress levels. Among the houseplants with the potential to boost wellbeing, they list mother-in-law's tongue, bamboo palm and the jade plant. Happily, they're easy to maintain and relatively simple to source. Further academic studies have shown that flowers have similar benefits - chrysanthemums have air purifying qualities, while roses have been shown to improve our general mood.

2. In Bloom.

Tulips and narcissi are characteristically seasonal choices, bringing cheerful colour to our spaces - they are relatively easy to grow in gardens and on balconies too, if you are feeling green-fingered. Spring flowers are heavy drinkers, though, so regularly top up the water. To keep them satisfied, remove leaves below the water line, and always cut them at an angle. The result of displaying fresh flowers? With their graceful, natural beauty, your home will feel like a much better place.

3. Green Light.

When we bring plants into our home, we ripe the benefits in our body, mind and soul. They create a welcoming space and bring instant peace and quiet. In the bathroom, try moisture-loving species such as aloe vera, monstera and alocasia. These can stand humid, steamy temperatures well, and will help to create a zen atmosphere while you soak in the bath.

In the sitting room, try creating an indoor jungle with potted palms and hanging baskets containing the delicate succulent string of pearls. Their sprawling leaves and trailing foliage will have lots of visual impact, and they both thrive in bright light.

4. Take Care.

While the aesthetic joy plants and flowers brings is undoubtedly important, it's not the only reason for filling our homes with greenery. As well as their environmental benefits, there's a lot to be said for caring for plants. In today's chaotic world, the ritual of watering, trimming and maintaining them can be calming in itself - doing so gives us a moment out of the day to pause and enjoy being surrounded by even just a little natural beauty.
